Ph.D. program: courses

The logical continuation of studying at master’s program is an opportunity of joining the third-level education - graduate or Ph.D. program in Finance, the first in Ukraine doctoral program of European standards, organized in close collaboration with leading international universities and Kyiv-Mohyla Business School.

The studying on Ph.D. is different from the training offered by the traditional graduate school. The Specialty Council composes for each Ph.D. student the individual schedule of mastering the professionally oriented disciplines necessary for advanced studying of the material and learning of mathematical tools, required for the chosen research topic. By the fundamental principles of the effective combination of teaching and research in higher education, all the Ph.D. students are involved in participating in scientific work in international research groups.

During 2008-2010 six research groups of Ph.D. students and leading scientists, professionals, masters were formed within the Ph.D. program and the laboratory of Financial and Economic Research. They worked on solving the important scientific problems such as analysis of the impact of foreign direct investment and medium-term loans for economic development of Ukraine and countries with economies in transition, analysis of the stability of financial systems, evaluation of optimal amount of reserves for Ukraine in terms of economic instability, the development of modern methods of financial decision-making etc.

Ph.D. Program in Finance focuses on the formation of a new generation of scholars and researchers who have perfectly mastered the economic and financial theory, could comprehensively analyze a macroeconomic situation and financial policy with the use of modern mathematical tools, and were naturally integrated into global information and research space.

Thecourse includes the theoretical issues of the monetary policy, examples of successful use of the monetary instruments in developed countries with respect to empirical achievements in this field.

Teaches: Horbachuk Vasyl

The course presents an introduction to the core theoretical models of economic growth and regional integration as well as some of the related empirical literature.

The course is composed of two parts: (1) lectures on economic growth and regional integration; (2) seminars (tutorials) introducing the use of the statistical software and presenting some examples of how this software can be used in applied research in the field of economic growth and regional integration.

Teaches: Bazilinska Olena

The course is based on the mastering of approaches to making important corporate decisions, their design, analysis, and management according to the developed financial strategy. The course should allow students to learn all major parts of theoretical and empirical research in the sphere of corporate finance. The main accents are made on the multivariate nature of corporation activities, decision-making by financial managers, and applying theoretical facts and empirical skills in order to analyse and forecast.

Teaches: Onischenko Andriy

The aim of the course is to teach the methodological aspects of decision making models in economics and finance. A specific goal of the course is to explain the possible methods of the risk and uncertainty implementation into models of various types with their further evaluation and determination of the optimal decisions even without sertain information. The course also provides insights into the models sensitivity analysis and obtained results interpretation.

Teaches: Lukianenko Iryna

PhD research colloquium aims at the development of the independent research performance skills, ability to clearly determine the relevance, purpose and objectives of the investigation, and presentation skills. This course creates a favorable environment for the structure of the research formation, identification of the suitable methods of its realization and performance of the professional literature review in the field.

Teaches: Lukianenko Iryna

The course is dedicated to mastering the skills of econometric modelling with the help of the modern software. On the specific examples, students are introduced to using VECM, Logit, Probit, Panel Data, System of Simultanious Equations techniques to test economic relationships and model complex economic systems. The course allows to understand in practice the statistical principles in economics and finance.

Teaches: Ivakhnenkov Serhiy

The aim of the course is to deepen and broaden the skills of the  complex economic and financial systems modeling using system dynamics method. During the course, the simulation models and special programs are used to study various aspects of the behavior of the complex economic and financial systems at the macro and microeconomic levels. On the base of the developed models the policies will be analyzed to define the effective strategies of the system improvement. With modern software iThink studens learn to use quantitative and qualitative data to develop and test models that can be used for a wide range of research and discussion of the topical issues and to ensure effective organization of economic and financial relations on the micro and macro level.

Teaches: Semko Roman

The course is dedicated to analysing the behavioural peculiarities of investors and financial managers when they make investment decisions. The classification of irrational traits of behaviour of different types of investors, which can affect the inequitable pricing on stock market — bubbles, is presented. Students are introduced to the key models of behavioural finance and are encouraged to use them on the Ukrainian real estate market.

Teaches: Shumska Svitlana

The aim of the course is to master fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are needed for a deep understanding of the processes occurring in the economy at the macro level, and creation of the adequate macroeconomic models with a high quality forecasts.

Teaches: Shportyuk Volodymyr

In the present course doctoral students are introduced to the main theoretical instruments of a financial analytic: objective and risk-neutral probabilities, random walk of market characteristics (geometrical Brownian motion), martingale processes, construction of Ito integral, multi-dimensional stochastic processes, stochastic differential equations, Kolmogorov equations, theories of valuating European, American, and exotic options, Black-Scholes and Merton models, calibration models of Cox–Ingersoll–Ross and Brace Gatarek Musiela etc. The place of stochastic calculus in the work of a financial analytic is the same as the differential calculus does in the work of a qualified engineer.

Teaches: Mertens Oleksandr

The aim of the present course is to introduce students to the technical side of developing the optimal strategy of an investor’s behaviour on the bond market. The theory of bond portfolio is quite advanced and requires a bond-manager to know wide set of financial disciplines. The course allows students to practically implement the current trading strategies, as well as demonstrate original methods of playing on the obligation market.

Teaches: Zvarych Olga

The aim of the course is to master the fundamental knowledge of the budget process. This includes the skills of practical estimation of the budgetary institutions' revenue and expenditure, planing of the budgetary funds, identification of the rational ways of the budget funds realocation, and ability to define the effective usage of the available resources in budgetary institutions.

Teaches: Primierova Olena

The purpose of the course is to master the knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of the financial management through the financial intermediaries and financial analysis services. The subject of discipline is the relationship arising from the movement of financial resources between the state, corporations and individuals that are mediated by specialized financial institutions.

Teaches: Kaminskyy Andriy

Today, the analysis, valuation, and modelling of financial risks is one of the most important aspects of operations of every financial institution. The course introduces doctoral students to the contemporary approaches to identification and analysis of risks, estimation of their value and probability. The main mathematical methods and models of different types of risks and methods of managing risks are explored.

Teaches: Ivakhnenkov Sergiy

The course is devoted to the study of general methodological aspects of research in finance, in particular those that are based on the positivistic and interpretivistic approaches and paradigms of modern scientific knowledge. The problems of basic financial tenets, theories, models, principles, standards and hypotheses are studied. The application of the qualitative and quantitative research methods in finance are revealed, including setting up experiments, hermeneutics, analyzing business situations, statistical methods, observations, surveys, interviews etc.. Acquired during the course knowledge allow fot mastering the methodology of scientific research of modern European and American standards of the third level education and preparation of the high quality dissertation project at the end of the course.
