The group of Ph.D. students of Finance Department in NaUKMA successfully performed on the 33d International Conference on System Dynamics in Boston, USA

In July 2015, the research group of Ph.D. finance students from NaUKMA, led by the Head of Department Professor Iryna Lukianenko, successfully performed on the 33d International conference in System Dynamics in Boston, USA. This research visit is a logical continuation of the Department of Finance three-year collaboration with the System Dynamics Group at the University of Bergen in a project titled “Learning Economics with System Dynamics Modeling”.

The annual System Dynamics Conference brings together people from all around the world, seeking to share relevant scientific research and practical results of their work in the field of system dynamics. It is held every year alternately in North America or Europe. The primary goal of the Conference is to provide a convenient platform for the meeting of different scientific interest groups, introduce newcomers to this community, keep researchers up to date with latest developments and innovations in the field and provide unique opportunities for networking and future productive cooperation. The program includes plenary reports, which demonstrate the outstanding work in system dynamics, parallel and poster sessions, representing the most modern studies and practical implementation of the method, and a series of seminars on various topics ranging from basic software use to advanced techniques of system dynamic models analysis. It is crucial that the conference also includes special events for professional and social communication and exchange of ideas.
During the Conference, NaUKMA group introduced three articles. Ph.D. students, 3d-year Ph.D. student Anton Lytvyn and 1st-year Ph.D. student Pervin Dadashova made a report in a session “Improving Business Practice” with jointly prepared article “A System Dynamics Approach to Modelling Business Activities of Ukrainian General Insurers”. The Head of the Department of Finance, Professor Iryna Lukianenko together with David Wheat, System Dynamics Professor at the University of Bergen and coordinator of Norwegian-Ukrainian Project, and 3d-year Ph.D. student Iaroslava Stelmashenko prepared a communicative article "Learning Economics with Dynamic Modeling. A Norwegian-Ukrainian Collaboration Project". The report was presented within the section “Innovative Teaching Initiatives”. The full text of the article can be viewed by link Paper.

Finally, for the second time during the project, Oleksandr Faryna, 3d-year Ph.D. Student of the Department of Finance in NaUKMA, and lecturer of the first in the history of Faculty of Economics in NaUKMA course in System Dynamics called “System Dynamics Methods in Finance” made a speech at the Conference. Oleksandr prepared an article, jointly written with David Wheat titled “The Danger of Float: The Case of Ukraine”, and presented it in a section “Macroeconomics”. But it was not the end of the research trip. After the conference, the group visited Washington DC to disseminate information about its project, spread the information about the economic situation in Ukraine and meet with potential donors. Therefore, fruitful and interesting talks were held with representatives of The Fund for American Studies - Roger Ream and Randy S. Teague. The mission of this organization is to support and develop leaders from all over the world by spreading the ideas of liberty, limited government and free markets in order to create a free society.
Moreover, the group had the opportunity to meet renowned researchers in the social sciences, such as the Brookings Institute senior researcher Marvin Kalb and Dalibor Rohac from the American Enterprise Institute.

Finally, the research team met with John E. Herbst, the previous US ambassador to Ukraine, which is now actively lobbying Ukraine's interests in America.
Fortunately, such projects, provided by the international relations of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the Department of Finance in particular, once again gave the students of the department the opportunity to speak in front of the international, publicly known audience, to listen to speeches of prominent researchers, and see the world. With the help of these short- and long-term programs, our travel department ensures continuous development of not only the intellectual capital of students but also their outlook and worldview. This is the cornerstone of shaping the future elite that will represent Ukraine at the world level!
